Dilemma (poem)

December 25, 2006
Like lit oil-lamp glowing dim,
Like water current running low,
Like a cistern leaking water,
Like an idiot teaching wisdom,
So are many.

I hear no more
I listen no more.

Boost not my bile
I hear no more
I listen no more!

But someone taps my shoulder
And says:
“To coil into one’s shell
Is not safe as well.”

Today (poem)

December 25, 2006
It is dawn: cocks can crow. Today shall rise
The night we’ve passed
And soon, it will be noon
Then the day should take its beauteous shape.

Ah! Ah! Soon, O, it will be noon, and
For all I know, the day must come and go some way
This afternoon from yesterday differs
Nor moon, nor star, nor old Sol be still.

- Olusanya (poem)

When We Close Our Eyes

December 25, 2006
When we close our eyes
For a second
We appreciate the realms of blindness.

We regard all men disabled
Not just the blind.

Monkey

December 25, 2006
Again she steps out
Frenzied, shrouded
With crazy flair
She beckons at Adam;
Winking, blinking, whispering, hissing
Making lustreless, lustful notes.

Once more,
These triumphant feats ensue
Hark!
She preys on another. But hush!
What if such woes as defy cure evolve?
Who cares?

A dressed monkey stays a monkey.

They hop from tree to tree.
Craftily, they wink, to charm
Crazily, they giggle, to serve
Out there, in the twilight,
They bluff. And in nearer forests
They swarm.

Obedience (poem)

December 25, 2006
Since a sermon was given on that mount,
We set our feet along a narrow path
Ever zealous, we simply obey
“It leads to life; the wide one to death”
We make a choice and go straight
We never look back to moan or sigh
We think not of what the world has in store
We have more than what we left
Thorns prick, thwart and trammel our fearless feet
Still, we go, vowing to stay the course or die.

Though far away from the wide way come voices
Mocking, jesting and laughing at us, and
At the wisdom of that which we’ve chosen;
They are bounded not; they walk side by side
The voices toll wildly, jabbing at us:
“Come, fools! Come treasure some measure of leisure
For who knows? Tomorrow we may die.” Yet,
We’re moved not to repent or regret.

Only a poor rich man eased his soul.

Since a sermon was given, yes, since then
We’ve stridden off and never tried to stray;
A matry was stoned to death as he prayed
Then, being confused, we were scattered
Simon was hanged head-down for praising the Lord
Paul’s pate was chopped for same offence
Many of us still die in bonds like mere monkeys…
But that for which we’re called stays intact!
Fearless “die-hards.” Ahead, staunch brethren, move!

My Rose (poem)

December 19, 2006

Behold my Rose
The pope saw her
And took note
Till,
“Lord, I appreciate your work,”
He said.

Song (poem)

December 12, 2006

My heart sings
Sweetly of a lass
Singular heiress to me.

She sings for me her song.
She steals my heart away.
I sing this chorus to the song:
“Ah! You steal my heart away.”

All the time I sing
I sing gladly to her
My happy, happy heiress.

Sleep (poem)

December 10, 2006

It was late in the night -
The mind flew away
What could the soul feel?
Idle lay the weary heel

Prophecies are here foretold

I heard some nocturnal bird howl
Not for me the melancholic cry!
Merrily, merrily I sang.

Lakeside Fiesta (poem)

December 10, 2006
Much later,
Partner was drowsy.

Once more,
We’d bit into the peach
- Its very first fruits.
We’d drunk of finer fountain

I heard tattoo drums roll.
For each of us they rolled.

Lakes, clouds, trees,
I heard some nocturnal bird howl
Not for us the melancholic cry!

Merrily, merrily we sang
Along.

More (or Team Effort) (poem)

December 10, 2006
One more’s forced his glorious way in
To learn from Him, to wait
Wait to watch night’s lamp burn out
Here where seeds yield flower with weed
Seeds turn trees.

Now,
Let’s till till sunset
Our ardent souls much more could reap
God bless our comely hands.

- Adeshina
